THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It’s scarcely surprising anymore to hear politicians promising to gush milk and honey through the streets. But chicken ‘biriyani’? Elated Kerala Congress (Jacob) party workers did just that to celebrate young Anoop Jacob formally taking charge as Food and Civil Supplies Minister on Monday.In the afternoon, passersby were astonished to find a small cargo auto parked next to the Secretariat and some men doling out large helpings of the biryani in paper plates. The vehicle sported several large vessels overflowing with the sumptuous freebie. The astonishment lasted barely a second as all and sundry made a beeline for the vehicle.Soon, the vehicle had a sizable crowd laying siege to it. People from nearby government offices also were seen rushing out to partake of the unexpected bounty. The party workers identified themselves as belonging to the Kerala Cong (Jacob) Ponnumangalam area committee, Karackamandapam.According to them, hundreds of people had savoured the steaming hot biriyani by 1 pm. The ‘biriyani politics’ lasted up to 2.30 pm, according to eyewitnesses.It’s doubtful whether the Minister was aware of his partymen’s exultant act.But the coin also had another grim side to it. Two women who regularly sell lunch packets in the area were robbed of their customers, who chased frantically after the free biriyani.
