CHENNAI: By engaging over one lakh people in a noble cause, the Joy of Giving Week, with every year, has been making significant progress. This year, along with a major fundraising event, Battle of Buffet, the Joy of Giving Week marks newer dimensions that will include auction of clothes donated by celebrities.Leading hotels in the city will come together to offer their best culinary spread at the Battle of Buffet, organised by Oriental Cuisines and Center for Social Initiatives and Management (CSIM), at the Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, on October 9. It seeks to serve as a platform for donors to contribute to a social organisation of their choice, and as a thank-you gesture, they would get to taste the signature dishes prepared of the hotels. Says M Mahadevan, MD, Oriental Cuisines, “Last year, we raised Rs. 1 crore, and we are expecting to raise more funds this year. The proceeds from the event will go to more than 55 NGOs. ” On Sunday, the auctioning of a T-shirt signed and donated by actor Rajnikanth, saris donated by actresses Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Rekha, Trisha and Suhasini Maniratnam will take place. Latha Kumaraswami from Tanker Foundation said that to help raise funds, an auction will be conducted on ebay to have a special lunch with actor Suriya and the proceeds from it will go to the foundation.The tickets that cost Rs. 5,000 will be sold at Chennai Trade Centre on October 9. The cake that stole the show!This could be the first time that a tasty-looking chocolate cake was guarded by more than 15 people. Confused? On Thursday, as part of the Joy of Giving Week, M Mahadevan, MD, Oriental Cuisines, spread the word ‘joy’ through a 100-metre long photo cake that was on display at the Express Avenue Mall. Open to the public, the cake baked by a team of 22 people from French Loaf contained 500 kg of chocolate powder, 300 kg of chocolates, 200 kg of fresh cream and 1,000 icing sheets that had images of movie posters from Pattinathar (1936) to Mankatha (2011), pasted on it. Each kilo was priced at Rs. 1,500. It was first cut by Saroj Goenka and Kavita Singhania. Saroj Goenka then bought 10 kg of the cake in support of the charity. Film personalities like Suhasini Maniratnam, director Jayendra of Nootrenbethu fame, Parthepan, Bagiyaraj, Poornima Bagiyaraj and film news Anandan graced the occasion.Mahadevan said the proceeds from the event will be used to renovate the kitchen of Mahesh Memorial Trust, which caters to paediatric cancer patients. He also added, “Every year, we do something to raise funds for Mahesh Memorial Trust. Last year, we made cupcakes and the profits went to the trust. This year, to bring the film fraternity together for this good cause, we decided to bake a cake that has more than 50 Tamil cinema posters chosen by Anandan.”
