HYDERABAD: Just two days after his marriage, a professional photographer spent the night in Hyderabad police commissionerate. Well, he was not there as an accused but to assist police crack the sensational gold robbery that took place in Abids recently.On June 14, Amjad Khan, a resident of MS Maktha was on his way to Royal Hotel near Abids GPO to attend a dinner party with his friends. While he was riding the bike, he saw four persons travelling in two separate bikes suddenly attack a pedestrian with a knife.“The assailants attacked Rakesh Sakariya on the back of his right shoulder and snatched the bag, which I later learnt had five kg gold. Immediately the bag was handed over to persons on the other bike who sped away in no time, followed by the others,” said Amjad Khan, an eye-witness whose valuable inputs led investigators to the accused. Amjad and his friend Abed Khan had happened to witness the offence by chance.At a press conference on Saturday, police commissioner AK Khan produced the accused in the gold robbery- Sabri Prakash Vyas, Gopal Purohit of Mumbai, Narender of Rajasthan and Sunil Joshi of Secunderabad.3.67 kg of stolen gold was also recovered. Two more accused are still on the run. AK Khan appreciated both eye witnesses- Amjad and Abed for coming forward to help crack the case. “Whatever reward police give me, I will donate it to the trust run by the state police for benefit of policemen who die while performing their duties,’’ Amjad added.Recalling the incident, Amjad Khan said, “As none were coming forward to help Rakesh, who was bleeding profusely, I asked his brother Sonu to shift Rajesh to hospital and approach Abids police station to register a case,” Amjad said.But he didn’t realise he had a very imporant part to play till he was called by a constable to meet deputy commissioner of police Akun Sabharwal.“All through the night, we had go through the CCTV footage of the location to identify the accused.My family members were really worried as it happened just two days after my marriage,’’ he said. It was his remembering partially the registration number of one of the bikes, AP13- 2406, which gave the lead to police. By using all probabilities in that series, police did house-to-house verification of vehicle owners and nabbed one accused, Sabri Prakash Vyas, a gold merchant and recovered 1 kg of gold from him.
