CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday directed the authorities to take steps on a war footing to drain out the water stagnated on EVR Periyar Road and surrounding areas due to overflow of rain water from Chetpet lake located behind the Kilpauk Medical College. Vehicular traffic on EVR Periyar Road was diverted through other routes on Monday and Tuesday. Following the orders of the Chief Minister, officials from the Highways Department inspected the road and decided to fix two rows of 24 pipes across the EVR Periyar Road and connect them to the storm water drain on Barnaby Road so that water would recede quickly.Since the Chief Minister had directed the authorities of the Highways Department to complete the works by Tuesday night itself, works were on in full swing on EVR Periyar Road. Highways minister Edappadi K Palanisamy, municipal administration minister K P Munusamy and Chennai mayor Saidai S Duraisamy inspected the works on fixing water pipes.On Monday night also, both ministers inspected the area and directed the authorities to fix the huge water pipes by breaking the road for about 60 feet. Since the works on fixing water pipes on the rest of the area would be completed by Tuesday night, traffic on EVR Periyar Road is likely to be restored very soon.
