Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam tourist resort experienced the coldest December night in over a decade as the minimum temperature at most places in the valley dropped to several degrees below the freezing point, an official of the Meteorological Department said on Friday. The temperature at night in Pahalgam, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, plummeted by over eight degrees on Thursday night to minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Previously, the lowest minimum temperature in winter in Pahalgam had been recorded at minus 10.4 degrees Celsius on December 15, 2007. The minimum temperature had not dropped lower than that at the resort since.
The valley's other famous tourist destination - the ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir - also experienced the coldest December night in the last three years. Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, a drop of over a degree from previous night's minus 9.5 degrees Celsius. It is the lowest temperature recorded Gulmarg in the last three years since the resort had recorded a low of minus 12.5 degrees Celsius on December 24, 2015.
Gulmarg is reportedly the coldest place in the state with temperatures that are even lower than the ones recorded in Leh and Kargil, towns in the frontier Ladakh region. J&K's capital city Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.0 degree Celsius last night, down from previous night's 0.1 degree Celsius. The MeT office's has predicted dry weather in the week ahead, and minimum temperatures that will drop below the freezing point.
