BANGALORE: Stating that farmers are the foundation of the nation's economy, Union Minister for Law and Justice M Veerappa Moily promised that the proposed legislation, the Land Acquisition Bill, would protect the interests of the farmers. Addressing the press here on Saturday the minister said that the focus of the Central bill on land acquisition would be on protecting the farmers and providing them sustainable development.
Assuring that all the grievances of the farmers, including rehabilitation, would be addressed in the proposed Bill, which the Union law minister felt that "would ensure development not at the cost of the farmers".Informing that the Bill would be tabled in the upcoming session of the Parliament, the minister, however, said, "Centre can not prevent any state government from acquiring land till the new legislation would come into operation. We can not direct the state governments to wait till the Bill would be adopted," he added.
