Police on Thursday used water cannons to disperse Congress workers as they tried to gherao Chief Minister Raman Singh's residence demanding that he and four other ministers resign over the Indira Priyadarshini Mahila Nagrik Sahkari Bank scam.
Congress General Secretary B K Hariprasad, Union Minister of State and acting PCC chief Charandas Mahant, leader of opposition Ravindra Choubey and several other senior party leaders along with over 1,100 supporters were heading for Chief Minister's house when they were stopped at Zila Sahkari Bank on GE road.
Additional District Magistrate Sanjay Agrawal said 1,178 Congress workers, including Hariprasad, Mahant and Choubey, were arrested and later released.
The protesters demanded that Raman Singh and his ministers - Brijmohan Agrawal, Amar Agrawal, Ramvichar Netam and Rajesh Munat - should step down for alleged involvement in the multi-crore cooperative bank scam.
Afterwards, Congress held a public meeting at Gandhi Maidan. In his speech, Hariprasad said BJP always tries to suppress the truth. "Not only in Chhattisgarh but in Gujarat and wherever they are, they try to cover up the truth," he said.
Leader of Opposition Ravindra Choubey alleged that following the CD expose by Congress, the concerned ministers were called to New Delhi, and BJP high command suggested them that they resign.
Mahaant demanded a CBI probe into the scam.
Earlier, Congress had released a CD and transcripts of a narco-analysis test conducted on bank's former manager Umesh Sinha in which he purportedly named Chief Minister Raman Singh and the four ministers as beneficiaries.
