KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation council disagrees with the High Court’s decision and has refused to allot 40 cents of corporation-owned land in Brahmapuram to a private company to set up a sewage treatment plant. The High Court had asked the corporation to allow the Aquakem Engineers (India) Pvt Limited to construct a sewage treatment plant at Brahmapuram. The company had agreed to take up the two crore worth project for free, provided it was given the land for the sewage treatment plant.“The High Court had asked to run the plant as a pilot project for the first six months. Afterwards, if the Pollution Control Board is satisfied with the plant’s operation, it may continue. Otherwise, the Aquakem will have to remove the plant at our own cost,” said Sreekumar V M, Operation Manager, Aquakem Engineers (India) Pvt Limited. However, the corporation council did not approve of the area, stating that the residents were already miffed with the condition of the prevalent waste treatment plant at the site and hence, will not allow the construction of another plant there."The area has been earmarked for various projects by the corporation. Moreover, we have not received any request for the land from the company’s side,” said a council member.“The company can start the project in some other area. For example, the non-functional plant near the Elamkulam sewage treatment plant can be repaired and used. The port trust has some land in Willingdon Island, which can be used for the project,” he added.
