Observing that the prosecution had failed to provide enough evidence, a local court acquitted a senior state government official from the charges of killing his wife.
Additional district sessions court judge Dinesh Chand on Tuesday acquitted Vinod Kumar in connection with the murder of his wife Kusum Lata due to lack of evidence.
According to prosecution, Lata was shot dead at her husband's residence in cooperative sugar mill at Morna in Muzaffarnagar district on September 6, 1999. Kumar was arrested but only to be later released on bail.
A case was registered against Kumar, a state public service commission officer and the then general manager of the cooperative sugar mill, in this connection.
Later, Uttar Pradesh government had handed over the inquiry to the CB-CID, which had filed the charge sheet against Kumar. During arguments, the defence counsel argued that Lata had committed suicide by shooting herself.
