TIRUPATI: CPI activists, led by district secretary P Haranadha Reddy, attacked two liquor shops for selling liquor at a price higher than MRP and not following shop timings.The CPI activists first attacked a liquor shop at the RTC bus stand around 6 am for keeping it open roundtheclock on the occasion of New Year. When the staff refused to close it, the angry activists threw liquor bottles on the road and destroyed them. After the attack, the staff downed the shutters.Later, the CPI activists went in a procession to a dhabha and damaged furniture and liquor bottles protesting the sale of liquor early in the morning in violation of the rules. On receiving information about the CPI attack, the police reached the dhabha and tried to prevent the activists from destroying liquor bottles. This led to a heated argument between the police and CPI activists.Meanwhile, other liquor shops and bars which were kept open to encash the demand on the New Year Day, downed their shutters fearing attacks. Some auto drivers and customers who came to purchase liquor, were seen taking away the bottles thrown by the CPI activists. The police pursued the CPI activists to give up the attacks on liquor shops.
