New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu unit of CPI-M on Sunday said the Centre should hold talks with the striking truck operators to end the agitation instead of taking stringent action against them.
Condemning the Centre for invoking the National Security Act against the leaders of the agitating truck operators, CPI(M) state Secretary N Varadarajan said in a release here that the strike had affected transportation of vegetables and essential commodities.
"The price of certain vegetables have gone up and instead of holding talks, the Centre's decision to control the strike through swift action is strongly condemned," he said.
"We urge the Centre to hold talks with the transporters associations and bring the strike to an end," he said.
The Centre had on Saturday announced that Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu would hold discussions with the truck operators on Sunday.
Baalu has said the truckers' list of grievances will be redressed. Those related to his department, he says, have already been dealt with. He added that the onus of finding a solution rests with state governments.
Baalu is in favour of the States to doing away with separate road permits and rationalising taxes.
The Central Government has already hinted towards a reduction in diesel prices.
