BANGALORE: Suranjadas Road, that connects HAL to Old Madras Road has a notorious reputation when it comes to the condition the road is in. The entire stretch has a number of potholes that has been making life miserable for the motorists who use it.According to KT Nagraj, superintendent engineer for Major Road Infrastructure, a proposal was made two years ago to widen the road. “The work should probably begin within the next couple of months. We will start it once the BWSSB completes their work. The entire stretch will be widened and instead of aslphalting the road, we will use reinforced concrete,” he informed. The BWSSB is currently relaying the underground pipe lines in the area. However, the officials in charge were unavailable to comment on the time required to complete the work. When Nagraj was asked if the service lane that runs parallel will also see repair work, as it also has a number of potholes, he said, “We will not touch the service lane. Only the main road will be widened. Once the work begins, we will also consult the traffic police to find an alternate route for the public to use.”In November 2010, according to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike officials, the potholes in the city were supposed to be filled by December 15, 2010. During that time they had also estimated a total of 9,989 potholes in the east zone, of which 4,200 had been attended to. However, when the concerned officials were contacted regarding the potholes on Suranjadas Road, no one was able to give a clear picture as to who exactly was responsible for it. When the BBMP zonal official (who spoke on the condition of anonymity) was asked, he said that it was the IRS officials who were responsible for the maintenance of the road. On the other hand, Nagraj the IRS official, clearly stated, “we are only responsible for widening the road, the patchwork is the zone officer’s responsibility.” “The entire stretch is a mess. A few of the potholes had been filled. However, all the patchwork has gone down the drain. The junction where 10th Main, Jeevanbhimanagar Road meets Suranjadas Road is particularly in a very poor condition. The potholes at that junction force the motorists to get into each other’s way, hence causing avoidable confusion and traffic jams,” said Reddy, a resident of Jeevanbhimanagar. He further mentioned that the road is not an even stretch. “There are a few areas where the road suddenly dips. Driving at night becomes very tricky and if one is not cautious, one could end up severely damaging the vehicle,” he added.
