Bhopal: Notorious Chambal dacoit Jagjivan Parihar has demanded a ransom of Rs.3.3 million to release three people he took hostage from Madhya Pradesh's Morena district a week ago, police said on Friday.

Parihar, who carries a reward of Rs.500,000 on his head, had kidnapped five people from Morena, 465 km from here, on Oct 28.

He left one of them, Sunil, the same day. Of the other four captives, he set free Ram Govind Gurjar and through him sent a letter demanding ransom of Rs.1.1 million each for the release of the three captives - Rajendra, Ramlakhan Gurjar and Pravendra Dandotiya.

Ram Govind Gurjar, who was released in the Chambal ravines on Tuesday night, reached Dholpur area of Rajasthan and told the police about his kidnapping. The police in Morena brought him from Rajasthan Thursday.

Gurjar handed over the ransom letter to the police. "Jagjivan Parihar has demanded a ransom of Rs.3.3 million in 15 days for releasing all the three people of Morena held hostage by him," said Morena Police Superintendent Rakesh Pratap Singh.

"However, police have launched a search operation to trace the captives."

Parihar, who was once a police informer, used to rear cattle and was a farmer before he turned a dacoit. He killed a Brahmin family that had encroached upon his land in 2002.

After that, he went into the Chambal ravines and became a member of the Salim Gurjar gang for a brief period. He had differences with Salim and formed his own gang. Parihar is wanted in several cases of robberies and murder in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
