Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa has once again grabbed the headlines. This time, there are talks the actor will be transferred from Bengaluru Parappana Agrahara Central Jail to Hindalga Jail in Belagavi. Several photos and videos of the actor, who is the prime accused in the murder case of Renukaswamy, have emerged where he can be seen enjoying royal treatment in Parappana Agrahara jail. Following this controversy, the prison department has been on high alert. Reportedly, Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah has directed the authorities to transfer the actor to another prison.
The Hindalga Jail is about a century old, where many influential and notable figures have been kept. Now that there is a possibility of the Kannada actor being transferred, let’s take a look at the difference between the two jails.
Hindalga Central Jail was built by the British in 1923 and is spread over a vast 99 acres of land. It can hold 1,162 inmates and is located 6 km away from Belagavi city. The prison has a rich history as during the freedom movement, prominent national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were imprisoned here. It was one of the key military establishments during British rule. Veer Savarkar was also imprisoned at this jail for 100 days. Hindalga Jail is the only prison in Karnataka that carries out executions. In 1976, six people were hanged here and in 1978 five more were executed.
Meanwhile, the Parappana Agrahara Jail, also known as Bengaluru Central Jail or Central Prison, is one of the largest prisons in the state. It was founded in 1997 and as of July 2023, the prison is spread out over 40 acres of land. Reportedly, it can hold 2,200 inmates.
As per legends, there were two brothers, Parappa and Konappa, who lived here, and that is how the areas got the names, Parappana Agrahara and Konappa Agrahara. After the old jail in Bengaluru was converted into a park, Parappana Agrahara was made into Bengaluru Central Jail. In September 2022, a prison cleanliness competition was held in Ahmedabad, where all the states and union territories participated. Here, Parappana Agrahara was recognised as the best jail in terms of cleanliness. In June 2021, the prison also received a four-star rating from the FSSAI for proper cleanliness and maintenance.
Speaking of Darshan’s transfer, the ongoing controversy led to the suspension of seven prison officials. The state home minister confirmed that seven officials were involved in the incident where the actor was given special treatment. Reportedly, the jail superintendent will also be transferred. As to why he is being transferred to Hindalga Jail, might be because it is known for housing, notorious inmates and has a reputation for stringent security measures. It has handled high-profile cases and has high security.
