Day After Former DD Anchor's Death, Tree Falls on Taxi in Mumbai, Two Injured

Mumbai: Two people were injured on Sunday in Mumbai's Parel area when a tree fell on a passenger taxi they were travelling in, a civic official said.

Manohar Kuchrakar(75) and Vidyavasani Mishra (52), were travelling in a taxi when the tree fell on the vehicle in Boiwada area at around 10:30 am. They were rushed to a hospital and later discharged, he said.

Fifty-eight-year-old Kanchan Nath, a former Doordarshan anchor, died on Saturday after a coconut tree fell on her. She was out on a morning walk when the tragedy befell her in Mumbai’s Chembur. Footage from a nearby CCTV camera showed passersby rushing to her aide and trying to remove the mammoth tree off Nath. She was taken to the hospital and succumbed to her injuries the next day.

Rajat Nath, Kanchan’s husband, told CNN-News18 that the civic body had assured them and then certified the tree as “healthy”. “We (the society people) had complained to the BMC about the tree. They assured us on Friday that they were coming in an hour and then stopped picking up our calls. The BMC had certified that the tree was healthy,” said Nath.

“Once I am done with my responsibilities, I will sue the BMC… I will not get my wife back, but this should not happen to anyone else,” said Rajat Nath to CNN-News18.

CNN-News18 has learnt that nearby residents had complained to the BMC in February that the tree’s branches were falling onto the road, posing a hazard to pedestrians and motorists. CNN-News18 has a copy of the complaint.
