Mumbai: The sessions court on Wednesday has granted interim protection to Mumbai police's encounter specialist Daya Nayak.
Nayak had been on the run after the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Mumbai Police alleged that he has assets much beyond his known sources of income.
A Mumbai sessions court had ordered him to appear before it after Nayak applied for anticipatory bail.
Nayak appeared in the special court after the court directed him and his wife to appear before it in person.
Nayak's lawyers had filed a petition in the sessions court on Tuesday urging for anticipatory bail for Nayak and his wife, who has also been booked for allegedly aiding Nayak in laundering the ill-gotten wealth.
Sub-inspector Nayak, who was suspended from service on Monday, had moved the Bombay High Court earlier for anticipatory bail, fearing arrest in the case filed by Anti-corruption Bureau against him.
However, the High Court asked him to first move the sessions court and come before it only if it was necessary.
Interestingly, the prosecution had assured the court on Tuesday that Nayak would not be arrested until his plea was heard.
Nayak, who has more than 50 encounter killings under his belt, is facing the charge of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income while his wife and Padte are alleged to have helped him in laundering his ill-gotten wealth.
Daya Nayak has applied for anticipatory bail.
