Delhi civic agencies launch pre-monsoon drives

New Delhi: The civic agencies here Wednesday launched drives to improve sanitation situation and to prevent spread of malaria and dengue in the city during monsoon.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation launched the "Malaria and Dengue Prevention Month" to sensitise citizens about these diseases and their prevention and cure before the monsoon sets in by this month-end.

"The aim of the corporation is to protect citizens from these diseases. Dispensaries and hospitals of east Delhi are well equipped to deal with such situation," said East Delhi Mayor Meenkshi.

A citizen helpline number (155303) is also operational where citizens can call for assistance during the monsoon.

"Teams of 710 mosquito breed checkers have also been constituted. They ould create awareness among the citizens by visiting people's houses. For preventive measures against these diseases, every ward of east Delhi has a group of officials called 'malaria circle'," said Meenakshi.

Similarly, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation launched a sanitation-cum-cleanliness drive.

"The drive will continue till June 30 and would emphasis on micro-level monitoring over day-to-day cleanliness of all areas, lifting of solid waste, cleanliness of public urinals," said North Delhi Mayor Yogendra Chandolia.

The drive will also work towards taking preventive public health measures, such as the control of water and vector-borne diseases, repair and maintenance of roads, foot paths, maintenance of parks, street lights and high-mast lights.

"Fogging and spray of insecticide for prevention of the water and vector-borne diseases, distribution of chlorine tablets in unauthorised colonies, slums would also be a part of this drive. Students and teachers of municipal schools would be sensitized about cleanliness under this drive," said Chandolia.

The heads of departments will carry out regular field inspections of different areas to monitor the drive so that immediate remedial action can be taken if any irregularity is noticed.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation's similar drive is scheduled to be launched June 20.
