CHENNAI: Traffic came to a grinding halt during the peak hours at arterial roads in the city on Monday as DMK supporters hit the streets to protest “false cases of land grabbing” registered against many party workers by the State government.Vehicles piled up for nearly an hour in south Chennai when the DMK workers protested in front of the Panagal building at Saidapet. Similarly, in central and north Chennai, traffic was blocked on Poonamallee High Road for 30 minutes due to the stir in front of the Collectorate.Office-goers, who commute from GST Road to Anna Salai, Guindy and Vadapalani, had a tough time during the peak hours. As N Vijayaraj (40), a differently-abled person of Saidapet, recounted, “I hired an auto from near my house to go for my office at Adyar. But, the auto wouldn’t have passed half a kilometre from my house when it got stuck in the traffic,” he said.Sensing that more number of vehicles are going to get stuck on the road, the auto driver asked Vijayaraj to alight. “From the middle of the road, I crawled to the bus stand. I had to wait in the hot sun nearly for half-an-hour to get picked up by my friend,” he said.Though the police diverted vehicles heading towards the GST Road from Guindy on Sardar Patel Road, this did not ease the congestion. Instead, vehicles coming from the Race Course Road got blocked. “I parked my vehicle on the roadside and stayed in my friend’s office located on Race Course Road till noon,” said Ramesh, a manager in a private bank.Similarly, vehicular movement on Poonamallee High Road was also disrupted. ”It took nearly half-an-hour for me to reach KMC hospital from the Pachayappa’s College junction. Hence, I missed my appointment,” said a media professional.People who had come to the Commissioner’s office also had a tough time as the entire road was jammed for nearly half-an-hour.
