SRIVILLIPUTHUR: In what could be a scene straight from a movie, the police on highway patrol arrested two drunken men from Kerala after a three km chase near here on Sunday. The twist in the bizarre incident is that a policeman was precariously clinging on to the door of the speeding car, all along the way. The police said Shanavas (32) of Kollam district in Kerala had purchased a car recently and had entered the Tamil Nadu border near Sengottai along with driver Rafeek. Both were said to be in an inebriated condition. When the police noticed that the car waggling on the road at Sengottai, they attempted to intercept it. But the men sped past the police team. At Sethur also, the police on highway patrol tried to stop the car, but in vain.Soon, the police started chasing the car in their patrol jeep and repeatedly attempted to intercept it. But that too did not work out. Finally, through a wireless communication, the police tracked the car near Srivilliputhur. Head constable Balakrishnan went near the car for conducting inquiries and had his hand on the car door when the men suddenly raced away, with the policeman clinging on to the door. After a three km chase, the patrolling team finally managed to overtake the car near Meenakshipuram Junction. Soon, the policemen overpowered Shanavas and Rafeek and rescued Balakrishnan. Based on a complaint from Balakrishnan, the police arrested Shanavas and Rafeek for attempt to murder (Section 307 of the IPC).
