For the first time in the city, a fertility centre has launched embryoscopy, a technology that chooses the best embryo for implantation by increasing the current success rates of infertility treatments.
This comes as a boon for childless couple who have been trying hard for a baby through IVF (Invitrio Fertilization) methods, observed Dr C Geetha Haripriya, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and chairperson of Prashanth Hospital at a press meet on Thursday.
An embryoscope is an IVF incubator with a built-in camera for automated time lapse imaging of fertilized oocytes in a safe incubation environment from conception to embryo transfer.
Normally, the embryos are assessed at specific time points and now with the help of embryoscope, the number of times of the assessment is increased thereby giving more information that helps to score the embryos.
Embryos with top scores are the best embryos and transferring these into the uterus ensures remarkable pregnancy rates.
Prashanth Fertility Research Centre, after acquiring the embryoscope, had used it on 25 patients in the past four months and there were positive results for 13 patients.
Dr Geetha said, “In the normal IVF methods, the ‘take-home’ baby rate is 45-55 per cent, but with the use of embryoscope, the success rate will increase by 15 per cent, which is a great thing.”
On the advantages of the embryoscopy, Dr Geetha pointed out that in a regular IVF protocol, one could observe the embryo development only for two days before the transfer. “But with the help of an embryoscope, we can observe the embryo for five days, to ensure it is properly developed before being transferred into the uterus,” she added.
