THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The annual Esenin Award has won a dominant position in boosting literary ties between India and Russia, Yelena S Shtapkina, Deputy Director (Culture & Information), Russian Centre for Science and Culture, New Delhi, has said. Shtapkina was speaking after jointly presenting this year’s award instituted in memory of the Russian poet Sergei Esenin to poet D Vinayachandran with A Sampath MP at the closing session of the Festival of Russian Language, Literature and Science on Sunday. ‘’The Esenin award will hopefully keep the momentum of literary ties significant in the broad spectrum of Russian-Indian cultural cooperation,’’ she said. ‘’We are always touched by the spontaneous response shown by the people of Kerala towards Russian history and culture. Undoubtedly, the growing popularity of Russian language and the increasing number of translations of literary works from Russian to Malayalam is a concrete testimony to this phenomenon,’’ she said. Consistent literary interactions and exchanges play a significant role in enriching the cultures of our countries, she said.Established authors, writers and poets from both Russia and India have done their best in rising to the occasion and translating the creative works of our outstanding literary personalities to the broader interest of the reading public, Shtapkina said. The Esenin Award is instituted by the Esenin State Museum, Moscow. The poet who died at the young age of 30 in 1925 remains close to the hearts of Russians to this day. Vinayachandran on Saturday brought out the first translated collection of Esenin’s poem’s in Malayalam. Mayor K Chandrika released ‘Esenin: Thiranjedutha Kavithakal’ by handing over a copy to writer Rosemary. Vinayachandran is the third recipient of the award after O N V Kurup and Puthussery Ramachandran. A Sampath MP, Puthussery Ramachandran, former Russian Department head of the Kerala University Dr Govindan Nair and  Honorary Russian Consul in Thiruvananthapuram Ratheesh C Nair were present.
