Mumbai: Udaan directed by debutant Vikramadtiya Motwane received a thunderous applause at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Back in India, the film opened on Friday and has been well received by the Indian audiences. To back that, the reviews are also in favour of the film.
Not many films are made on teenage issues and to bring the Indian audience to the theatres is a task for such kind of cinema. Vikramaditya says, “Of course, people will watch it, because that is an area which has not been tapped by the film-makers.”
The film highlights issues of teenagers and the film-maker is confident that everyone will connect with it. “It’s a kind of film which everyone will relate to. One would be able to identify with few instances in the film, which one might have experienced in one's teens,” says Vikramaditya.
There were rumours that Udaan is the biopic of writer-director Anurag Kashyap. However Vikramadtiya denies this, saying, “It is just a coincidence. I wrote the script and when I narrated it to Anurag, that’s when I came to know that some of the scenes have resemblance to his real life.”
When asked how much of his real-life experience has been added to the film, he says, “Firstly, the film is not my biopic or something. But there are few scenes like taking a car out for a spin late in the night and having fun with friends - those I have included in the film.”
In India, it is not a smooth process for a student to pursue his dreams as there are many obstacles in his way, like lack of infrastructure or no support from family. Vikramaditya agrees that this is a major problem in India.
He says, “The higher education system needs more attention where it can give students a lot of flexibility to pursue their dreams. They should be allowed to focus on what they like doing.”
Along with the Indian release, the film also releases in Singapore, Australia, South Africa and the United States. “The other countries have been taken care of. We are still trying to get a UK release. But it should happen in a week's time,” the director added.
