BANGALORE: Plants are bloated with enough sensation to respond to the stimuli every moment of their lives! Within each plant, there is a constant ceaseless activity, their senses are sharp, sophisticated and some can detect the lightest of touch as well! Don’t believe it all? The unusual and extraordinary horticulture garden maintained by Balaji Dakoju and Padma Dakoju is a testimony the above claims. So much so, that the couple is on the verge on getting their names encrypted in the Guinness Book of World Records. Residents of Bharat Housing Society Layout at Uttarahalli Road, the couple plan to enter the prestigious record book on the basis of growing Balsam plant, a seasonal flowering plant to an abnormal height. The couple claims that the plant nurtured by them has attained an abnormal height of 10 feet and still growing, whereas the normal maximum height for the variety is two-three feet.“We have as many as six Balsam plants and all of them have reached an abnormal height of above six feet. The tallest one has reached 10 feet and still growing, whereas, another one spreads over an area of 40 sq ft.This is remarkable as generally the Balsam plant grows to a height of two feet and covers an area of two-four sq feet,” said Balaji Dakoju.Balaji further claims that despite the fact that the seasonal flowering plant has a life span of 100-120 days, the Balsams growing in his pots are more than six months old.Holding 19 records against their names in Limca Book of Records, the couple with their wonder garden is all set to step in the home of the longest, shortest, fastest, slowest...and what not! “This is not my first venture to get into the prestigious record book as I contacted them in the year 1991 for the first time, regarding the Cosmos plant which grew to an abnormal height of 11 feet, and later reached to 14 feet. But these records have been kept pending with them, awaiting for comparisons,” said Balaji.Nurturing the plants for more than 40 years now, the couple’s parent-like affection towards the plants has had some visible effects — some growing to giant size and some blooming round the year.Ask them the secret behind their wonder garden and what couple shares is unbelievable. “We do not use any chemical or even the home-made manure. No hybrid or any special seeds are being used. There is no scientific reason behind it.The result just reflects the love and affection we share towards these plants. We nurture them like our children, request them to grow, pray for them, provide them the touch therapy and they bloom to their best,” said Balaji.
