CHENNAI: A major inferno that broke out in a building at the State-owned Ezhilagam complex left a firefighter dead, besides seriously injuring two senior officers and destroying service records of several government employees, at Chepauk here in the early hours of Monday. Lead fireman of Teynampet station N Anbazhagan (55) died on the spot, while divisional fire officer (central) Priya Ravichandran (35) and Ashok Nagar station fire officer Murugan sustained serious burn injuries when the blaze brought down the two-storey building housing the offices of the Directorate of Social Welfare and Establishment and the Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce on Kamarajar Salai.About 150 firefighters, 15 fire tenders, 30 water tenders and two sky lifts, led by divisional fire officers (DFOs) D N Velayudhan Nair (north), S Veeramani (south), Namachivayam (suburban) and Priya Ravichandran had rushed to the spot after a watchman at the complex called the cops on noticing smoke and flames.Tragedy struck the team when Anbazhagan, Murugan and fireman Prabhakaran entered the building and the roof caved in on them. “The blaze started in the social welfare office on the first floor, burning down the wooden beams that held the roof, and the over 100-year-old building collapsed,” sources said. ACP (Triplicane) S Senthil Kumaran said a case of accidental fire had been registered at the Anna Square police station.
