BANGALORE: Five labourers were killed when a portion of a crane came crashing down at the DLF Westend Heights New Town project site at Akshaynagar, Begur, off Bannerghatta Road around 5.30 pm on Thursday.The deceased have been identified as Baljit Singh, Avtar Singh, Vikram Singh, Srikanth and Amarnath, all in the age group of 25-30 years. They were from Punjab, Maharashtra and Bihar.Praveen Bhosle (28), has been admitted to Fortis Hospital with multiple injuries.According to an official from Fortis Hospital, five were brought dead to the hospital and Bhosle, who sustained multiple injuries, is in a critical condition. “Bhosle is undergoing surgery and we are trying our best to stabilise his condition. They were brought to the hospital around 7 pm,” he said.An official from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said, “We have spoken to the police and contacted the DLF management.There was no problem with the building plan, all sanctions were in place. According to the assistant executive engineer, Begur sub-division, the incident occurred at the end of the working day.” Police commissioner Jyothiprakash Mirji and DCP South Sonia Narang who visited the spot said that action will be taken against those responsible for the incident and soon they will be penalised.Papanna, president of Karnataka Rajya Karmikara Hitaraksha Trust, said, “Around 2,000 labourers are working at this site of whom about 1,000 are from our trust. The labourers employed here have no ESI or PF benefits. We have informed the MD and president about safety at this site many times. Earlier too, a labourer was injured in his hand but the incident has not come to light. But this time we have lodged an FIR at the police station.” STATEMENT FROM DLFIn a statement issued by the company soon after the incident, DLF Southern Homes Pvt Ltd said it regrets the mishap which occurred at its site at Begur, resulting in the loss of lives of its contractors’ employees.Expressing condolence to the families of the deceased, the company announced an ex-gratia of `5 lakh to the relatives of the deceased and `2, 50, 000 to the injured person, whose medical expenses will be borne by DLF Southern Homes Pvt Ltd.
