The State Government on Monday allayed flood fears as water level in the major rivers is still well below the red mark. Official sources said floodwater on the Hati river bridge in Kalahandi district has receded and people, who had been evacuated, have returned to their village. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting here, has announced seven days relief for flood-affected people of Tumudibandha and Kotagarh blocks in Kandhamal district. The two blocks were affected due to flash flood on August 2.

Floodwater flowed at a height of three to four feet over the bridge on the Hati at Junagarh. As a result, vehicular traffic was disrupted on National Highway-26 from Bhawanipatna to Junagarh. Anticipating flood inundation, about 1,500 people of four villages were evacuated and sheltered in a nearby school building.

Official sources said the district administration has opened free kitchen for the evacuated people. Medical teams have also rushed to the affected villages. However, water receded on Monday and vehicular traffic on NH-26 has been restored.

Water level in all the rivers, barring the Mahanadi and the Subarnarekha, is falling. As there was not much rainfall in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and the State during the last 24 hours, the possibility of flood has receded for the time being.

Water level in different reservoirs like Indravati, Upper Kolab, Balimela and Hirakud had increased because of heavy rainfall during the last several days. The water level of Hirakud dam was at 613.08 feet till reports last came in.

The Chief Minister asked the officials concerned to control the outflow of Hirakud reservoir as per the rule curve. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Surjya Narayan Patro said there was nothing to fear as water level of different rivers is flowing below the danger mark.

While inflow into the Hirakud reservoir was 4,37,786 cusec, the outflow was 3,13,406 cusec. As many as 19 gates of the reservoir have been opened and the discharge at Mundali was 6,25,975 cusec.
