HYDERABAD: Universal Access to Medicines and Surgicals, a pilot project to ensure 100 percent availability of medicines and surgicals in all government hospitals and facilities to all patients, will be launched in three districts _ Adilabad, Chittoor and Srikakulam— in December. All medicines and surgicals will be provided free of cost and no patient will be required to go to a private pharmacy to buy any medicine or surgical item. Before the scheme is launched, vacancies of doctors and pharmacists in hospitals will be filled up on contract basis. Announcing this at a high-level meeting at the secretariat on Friday, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed the AP Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation to place the doctors and stock the required medicines in all government hospitals and health centres by the end of November.“If the pilot project in the three districts is successful, it will be extended to other districts in a phased manner,” said. Health minister DL Ravindra Reddy, chief secretary Pankaj Dwivedi, special chief secretary (health) G Sudhir, and other senior health officials attended.
