THALASSERY: The municipal authorities dumped several lorry loads of garbage from the municipality at the Pettippalam trenching ground, using police force on Tuesday. The police used lathis to drive away the agitating local people, including women and children, to pave the way for disposing the garbage at Pettippalam. The action committee of the local people and environmental workers had steadfastly refused to allow the municipal authorities to deposit the municipal garbage at the trenching ground for the past four and half months. Efforts to find a lasting solution to the issue so far hadn’t succeeded.It was around 4.30 am on Tuesday that the municipal authorities reached Pettippalam with the support of a posse of policemen to dump stinking heaps of waste at the trenching ground. Those who tried to block the municipal vehicles were arrested and removed by the police. The ‘pandal’ used by the agitating local public was set afire by the police, even as the municipal workers deposited the garbage at the trenching ground.The agitating public were taken aback by the show of police force. As many as 54 of the agitators were arrested and taken to the Thalassery police station, even as the rest of the public were driven away. Those arrested by the police resorted to a fast at the police station.
