People allege that there was a gas leak in the cold storage on Sunday evening too.
Kolkata: A fire broke out in a cold storage after ammonia gas leaked and then spread to an adjacent cotton godown at Maniktala in north Kolkata on Monday.
Altogether 25 fire tenders were trying to control the fire, but scarcity of water was hindering operations, fire brigade sources said.
"There is a huge amount of smoke which is obstructing visibility and making it difficult for the firemen," the sources said.
There was no casualty and none fell ill from the gas leak, they said.
"There were very few people in the area and all have been moved to safer places," they added.
Local people alleged that there was a gas leak in the cold storage on Sunday evening following which the fire brigade arrived, but left without doing anything.
