Srinagar: Chairman of the hard-line faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was placed under house arrest on Tuesday, ahead of his planned participation in the fourth-day rites of a youth shot dead by CRPF personnel at Munawarabad on Friday.
Official sources said police had been deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Geelani on the outskirts of the city as a precautionary measure since this morning with a directive to not let him out.
Geelani was planning to attend the chahrum (fourth day) ceremony of Inayatullah Bhat who was shot dead by CRPF personnel outside their camp on Friday, sparking massive protest demonstrations in the city.
A CRPF spokesman had said on Saturday that the youth was shot at by personnel after he ran towards the camp ignoring warnings to stop.
A team of Hurriyat hard-line leaders who visited Bhat's residence condemned the incident as "the worst example of the state terrorism and high-handedness", a statement said.
