New Delhi: Air carrier GoAir has refuted the allegations of charging extra for carrying relief supplies to flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir. The airline said that there has been some misunderstanding.
In its statement, GoAir said, "There seems to be some misunderstanding. We have, in fact, carried nearly 100 kg excess baggage without any charges on the said flight. We have also offered free cargo services to the relief organisations working on the J&K situation. In fact, there is a blanket order from the CEO's office to waive off excess baggage charges for all flights to and from J&K. Additionally, the organisation is making cash donations and has also appealed its employees to make voluntary contributions for the flood victims. In this hour of need, we are totally with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and are doing our best to help them in every possible way."
The response came after a volunteer who was travelling to Jammu and Kashmir with medical and relief supplies alleged that GoAir operators asked him to pay extra for carrying the supplies. He said that the airline was charging for excess baggage.
He claimed that he switched to Indigo as it was not charging those travelling to Jammu and Kashmir for extra baggage. Speaking to CNN-IBN, Saif Bashir said, "I had taken tickets for GoAir, but later got to know they were charging more for extra luggage. It was just medicines and water bottles. I switched to Indigo as they were not charging anything," Saif said.
Meanwhile, Air India has also sent two aircraft to Srinagar to airlift people for free. The airline has also asked private airlines to assist.
NGOs like the the Uday Foundation have sent in 200 kg of relief including children's supplies to the state.
