The Union Territory government was considering starting a cable television corporation, the Chief minister N Rangasamy revealed in the UT Assembly on Monday. The Chief Minister was replying to a supplementary question on the same subject from K Lakshminarayanan of Congress in the Assembly.
CM Rangasamy admitted that the number of cable TV connections in the UT was much more than the 67,000 connections for which entertainment tax was collected. The CM said that with over 3.2 lakh ration card holders in Puducherry, there was no household without a television.
The CM said that the government would resort to a count of the number of cable connections and would not be hesitant to disconnect the connection of defaulters.
There were over 390 cable TV operators in Puducherry who claimed a total count of connections at 67,000. However, the number of cable connections in Puducherry was more than 2.13 lakh two years ago. “In that case, nearly `40 crore tax evasion has been happening since 2000.
