New Delhi: The JD(S), led by former prime minister H D Devegowda, on Saturday termed the decision to remove Gowda as party president "illegal and unconstitutional".
The decision to remove Gowda as party president and to suspend him from the primary membership for six years was taken by the rebel group headed by M P Veerendrakumar.
"The decision adopted by the minority group removing Gowda from the National President's post and dissolving the Karnataka unit are not valid under the party constitution and in law," said JD(S) spokesman Y S V Datta as quoted by PTI.
The party has convened a meeting of the National Executive in New Delhi on December 25 to take stock of the latest development and decide on the future course of action, including "stringent" action against rebels, he said.
The National Council held in Bangalore on November 13 in 2005 elected Gowda as National President and appointed a 75 member Executive Committee, Datta said, adding, Veerendrakumar and Surendra Mohan were party to these decisions.
The upcoming executive was also expected to nullify the decisions adopted by the rebels at their meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram and authorise Gowda to initiate action against them, he said.
In a pre-emptive move, Gowda has already suspended Veerendrakumar from the party and removed him from the JD(S) Parliamentary Party leader's post.
Only five out of the 75 executive committee members attended the rebels' conclave, claimed Datta.
