New Delhi: British rookie Lewis Hamilton won the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday to take his second victory in a row and forge 10 points clear of McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso in the Formula One championship.

The stage was set at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the possible continuation of what looks destined to be a vintage year in Formula One history.

Already on a pole position, Hamilton made a perfect start.

However, this was far from the case for Honda's Rubens Barrichello, who collided with Toyota's Ralf Schumacher and Red Bull's David Coulthard as they jostled for a position at the back of the starting grid.

And that saw all three drivers retire from the race before even completing a full lap.

Alonso tried his best to overtake his teammate again and again but ran wide onto the grass.

Hamilton crossed the line with a 1.5 second advantage over the rest of the field with Alonso second and Massa third.

The third 1-2 finish for McLaren-Mercedes of the season so far and Hamilton's second race win in as many weeks.

"The last few laps were - It just seemed to be very long and they came across the radio and said '15 lap's' and I was like 'OK' and then 15 laps just seemed like a lifetime - especially when you are in the lead and trying to maintain it, not pushing too hard or damaging the tyre. But I was able to do it and it was just very, very emotional," said Hamilton.

"It was great to see that there is a big crowd here and they are very very supportive, (there's) a lot of British fans out there, which is fantastic for me as I get a lot of energy from that," added the 22-year-old.

Hamilton now leads his teammate by 10 points, while McLaren, with four wins so far this season, lead Ferrari in the constructors' standings by 35 points.
