Hasina thanks media for lifting ban
Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina said, had it not been the media pressure, the ban on her would not have been lifted.

New Delhi: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina thanked the media saying that it was due to the pressure exerted by the people and the domestic and international media that the Bangladesh government had to lift the ban on her return home.

Shortly after the caretaker Bangladesh government lifted the ban, Hasina said she would return home "as soon as possible."

"It is due to the pressure from people in my country and from the domestic and international media that the ban has been lifted," Hasina was quoted by PTI as saying.

The former Bangladesh prime minister could not leave London for home as she was denied permission by the British Airways to board its flight on April 22.

Hasina said the "letter"" written by the caretaker government to the British Airways disallowing her from taking their flights will have to be first withdrawn before she can leave for Dhaka.

The Awami League chief also said she had some engagements to fulfil and they included a meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon.

She reiterated that the interim government had foisted false cases against her and wondered how she could be banned from entering Bangladesh when they had issued an arrest warrant.
