On Tuesday, at least 72.38 lakh passenger journeys were undertaken in the Delhi Metro, giving the service a new ridership record. Interestingly, this was the second straight day when the ridership was over 71 lakh. On Monday, the ridership was 71.07 lakh – the third-highest for the Delhi Metro till date.
So far, the highest ridership recorded in a day by the Delhi Metro was on February 3 this year when 71.09 lakh passengers opted for the mode of travel, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced on Wednesday.
“Delhi Metro Achieves New Ridership Record on 13th August 2024. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recorded its highest-ever passenger journeys on Tuesday, 13th August 2024 with 72.38 lakh passenger journeys being performed across the network,” a post on X by the DMCR reads.
Presently, the Delhi Metro network consists of 392.44 km with 288 stations, as per the DMRC. The network has crossed the boundaries of Delhi to reach Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, and Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh and Ballabhgarh in Haryana.
Last year, in a statement, the DMRC had said that it is catering to around 67 lakh passenger journeys on weekdays that “exceeded the projected figures of DPR (detailed project report)”.
In the calendar year 2023, the Delhi Metro, for the first time, recorded more than 200 crore passenger journeys (2,032,342,972). In 2022, the Delhi Metro recorded 149 crore passenger journeys. In 2019, the ridership touched 185 crore.
So far, out of the top five highest journey days, four were recorded this year – August 13 (72.38 lakh); February 13 (71.09 lakh); August 12 (71.07 lakh) and February 12 (70.88 lakh). The day with the fourth highest passenger journeys was recorded on September 4, 2023 with 71.04 lakh.
The DMRC was registered on May 3, 1995 under the Companies Act, 1956 with equal equity participation of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) and the Central Government to implement the dream of construction and operation of a world-class Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS).
While announcing the Delhi Budget 2024-25, finance minister Atishi had allocated Rs 500 crore for the service, saying that the daily ridership of Metro was more than 60 lakh people commute on the service every day in the previous year as against 24 lakh a decade ago.
By March 2015, a total 193 km of metro network and 143 stations were established in Delhi. However, in the past nine years, the Delhi Metro network has doubled in length to 393 km while the number of stations has increased to 288, she added.
