Kolkata CPI (M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechuri on Wednesday appealed to the striking medicos across the country to withdraw their anti-quota agitation.

The appeal came as the UPA government assured the striking doctors that it would increase the number of seats in higher educational institutions.

''It is high time that the students withdraw their strike. The proposal for increasing the number of seats, if implemented will not affect any section,'' he told reporters on the sidelines of the party's two-day Politburo meeting that began on Saturday morning.

Yechuri said the proposed incease in the number of seats was the "right decision" and it would help resolve the problem following the Government's decision to reserve 27 per cent seats for OBC in higher educational institutions.

The Politburo is also likely to take up the issue of reservation, among other things, for discussion at its meeting.
