PUDUCHERRY: The French presidential elections to be held between April 22 and May 6 and the subsequent election to the XIV National Assembly (lower house of Parliament of France) to be held from June 10 to 17 has generated interest among the French citizens here in Puducherry.Already aspirants are getting ready to contest as French citizens living overseas have, for the first time, got the opportunity to contest for the National Assembly as France modified the system in vogue, allowing 11 constituencies overseas to elect representatives to the National Assembly.Among them is Ramakichenane Alavandane, a French citizen of Puducherry origin. A retired headmaster of French government school, he has served in various erstwhile and current French territories. Ramakichenane is now gearing up to contest as an independent from the 11th constituency spread in 49 countries including India, China and Russia. For a man who had been in the field of education, this transition is to address the concerns particularly in the area of education, health and social security. His substitute candidate is Cannabirane, a computer engineer and proprietor of a guest house.Meanwhile, arrangements are being made for holding the French presidential poll in Puducherry for the French nationals coming under the jurisdiction of French Consulate here. Four polling booths- two on the premises of French Consulate and one each in French Institute and the French school “Lycee Francaise.”-- Polling will be held from 8 am to 6 pm.
