Dr Wig is hopeful of Sandeep's early recovery, but he stresses that with any bullet injury 'you cannot predict'.

Chandigarh: Hockey star Sandeep Singh, who was injured after an Railway Police Force Assistant Sub Inspector's revolver went off 'accidently', has been discharged from the Intensive Care Unit of PGIMER in Chandigarh.

The doctors described his condition as 'much better', but they would not hazard a guess on how soon he would be able to start playing again.

Sitting in a separate chamber in a private ward of the hospital, 21-year-old Sandeep Singh looked cheerful as his elder brother Bikramjit Singh was helping him do some exercises.

"Today, Sandeep's condition is much better. He is able to talk, eat and pass motion without any difficulty. He is also free to watch television and he can pick up some action from the hockey field," PGI's Department of Surgery head, Dr J D Wig, who was among a team of doctors who operated on Sandeep for the bullet injury, said.

Sandeep's father Gurcharan Singh too looked in a cheerful mood, with his son having got a new lease of life after the mishap on board the Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express on August 22 near Kurukshetra injured the drag-flicker in the pelvis.

Dr Wig is hopeful of Sandeep's early recovery, but he stresses that with any bullet injury 'you cannot predict'.

"I cannot say for sure how long it will take him to wield his hockey stick. We have to be very careful, but he is responding well to the treatment," Dr Wig, who has closely been monitoring Sandeep's progress over the days, said.

He also had a word of caution for Sandeep's family urging them to guard against any infection at this stage as there has been a rush of people willing to see Sandeep.

Sandeep's family members including father Gurcharan Singh, Daljit Kaur, brother Bikramjit Singh and uncle Avtar Singh have been staying at the hospital and praying all along for his early recovery.

"I thank Waheguru that I will be able to sit close by with my son," Gurcharan Singh said on Tuesday.

Earlier not even family members were allowed to stay beyond a few minutes in the ICU.

For Daljit Kaur, her first priority is to see her son get well soon. "I know he has the determination and will power to overcome this injury soon," she said with emotions mixed with joy as she struggled to hold back her tears at the same time.

"He wanted to bring the Cup for India (forthcoming World Cup in Germany). Now, he wants his team-mates to do it for him," she said.
