THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After the much-adored Jackfruit and Mango fests, this time, get ready to binge on honey and dates. A week-long Honey-Dates Festival would kick off from August 3 to 10 at the Bhagyamala Auditorium at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium.Minister for Youth Affairs P K Jayalakshmi will inaugurate the Honey-Dates festival on August 3 at 5 pm. Mayor K Chandrika is to inaugurate the exhibition. Organised by the Prakruthi Arogya Samrakshana Vichara Vedi, the aim of the festival is to propagate the quality and goodness of original honey to the public. The festival will showcase varieties of honey, honey products, imported dates from various countries and much more. On the sidelines of the festival a wide variety of handicrafts will also be on display.The fest will showcase a wide variety of honey with medicinal values which could check obesity, fever and cold. "A major part of the honey available in the local market is extracted out of rubber plants and is of no medicinal value. For a common man, it is difficult to distinguish the original from the other. The festival, therefore, aims at helping people realize this fact and provide the real medicinal honey,” says Dr Gangadharan C V of the Prakrithi Arogya Samrakshana Vichara Vedi. ‘Cheruthen’, an indigenous variety, is strong enough to clear up speech difficulties in children. A variety of flavours will also be available. Various kinds of indigenous honey bees and imported varieties such as Mellifera and Cerana will be on show, organisers said. Different varieties of dates imported from Oman, Saudi Arabia and African countries will be available at the festival. An array of handicrafts from Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad, Karnataka and various other places in India will also be on display.K Muraleedharan MLA will preside over the inaugural function. The festival will be open to public from 10 am to 9 pm.
