Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted a "swift response" and decided that a strong retaliatory counter offensive was needed to send a clear message: "You hit us, we will hit you badly."
The Prime Minister asked National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to supervise the counter attack on Naga insurgent groups hiding in Myanmar. Doval dropped out of the crucial tour to Bangladesh at the last minute while Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag also cancelled his United Kingdom tour.
Two days after the Manipur ambush the NSA on June 6 held a meeting with General Suhag, Research & Analysis Wing and Intelligence Chief chiefs, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and chief of Army Intelligence. Very few people knew what was being planned. The Home and Defence Ministry along with the Manipur government were briefly informed about the strikes.
Finally, the war room decided to carry out the operation and Army's elite 21 Para Special Forces are assigned to carry out the surgical strikes. Both the NSA and R&AW chief are in Manipur to supervise the operations and aim to quickly finish the strike so that there is no casualty on the Indian side.
On June 9 the covert operation begins early morning. Army commandos from 21 Para are air dropped close to the Indo-Myanmar border. They swoop down on 2 terror camps inside Myanmar in the middle of night at around 3 AM.
The entire operation is successfully completed in 30 minutes as planned and Myanmar was kept in dark about this top secret mission. The Indian envoy informs Myanmar only hours after the strike.
The strike is not a one off strike and Doval will be in Myanmar in the next few days to discuss further action against Northeast terror groups.

The hot pursuit of Northeast terror groups inside Myanmar was completed in just 30 minutes by 40 commandos of Indian Army's 21 Para Special Forces. The surgical strike was carried out in retaliation to the June 4 ambush in Manipur's Chandel district in which 18 soldiers of 6 Dogra Regiment were martyred. The response from New Delhi was almost immediate and deadly.
