Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) proposes to clean up Hussainsagar at an estimated expenditure of Rs 1.47 crore per annum. Among the proposed works are removal of floating material like hyacinth and shoreline cleaning, collection and disposal of solid waste material, treatment of inflows, improvement in quality of lake water and protection of lakes and nalas in catchment areas.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, HMDA metropolitan commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad said the 14-km shoreline would be divided into six sectors to ensure proper monitoring and accountability once the works were taken up. According to him, pedal and motor boats would be used to remove floating material. Two vehicles with dumper bins would also be deployed to collect solid waste around the lake and transport the same to a GHMC disposal site. Two sanitary officers/retired officers will be deputed to monitor these operations regularly.
As far as the treatment of the inflows is concerned, it will be carried out in two methods under the Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project (HCIP). All the sewage and effluents flowing from the four nalas, Balkapur, Banjara, Kukatpally and Picket, would be stopped by interception and diversion structures and diverted through sewer lines laid separately. Currently, there are seven I&Ds at various places.
Of the three proposed Sewage Treatment Plants, two are being taken up. One, opposite the KIMS Hospital at Picket Nala and the other adjacent the Khairatabad Flyover at Balkapur nala. “Only treated water will be let into Hussainsagar for maintaining water balance,” said Neerabh Kumar.
In order to improve the quality of lake water, dredging of sediments at the mouth of each nala would be taken up shortly. About 100 workers would be employed to clean up the Hussainsagar. Simultaneously, under the HCIP, slum improvement works will also be taken up to involve people in the process.
