The EC has sent its request to President Kalam who will decide whether Jaya will finally be removed from Rajya Sabha.

New Delhi: The Election Commission has recommended the disqualification of MP Jaya Bachchan, wife of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, from the Rajya Sabha for holding a post of profit.

The EC has forwarded its opinion to President APJ Abdul Kalam on a complaint Bachchan that sought her disqualification from the Upper House.

However, the recommendations made by the commission were not immediately known.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is mulling legal action against the notice. "I will think over the matter and will decide what needs to be done," he said.

Jaya Bachchan also responded to the controversy. "I do not know why Samajwadi Party is being dragged into it," she said.

The EC had in October last year issued notice to Bachchan – a film actress and Rajya Sabha MP - acting on a complaint that she was holding an office of profit and hence should be disqualified from Parliament.

Jaya Bachchan is the chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corporation.

The Commission has acted on a reference from the office of the President following a complaint sent to him by Madan Mohan that Bachchan was appointed Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corporation after becoming a member of Rajya Sabha.

However, the Election Commission doesn't have the power to disqualify anyone as it can only recommend.

The matter is likely to come up for hearing with the Rajya Sabha.

'I will never quit politics'

In an interview to a Kolkata-based English daily on Sunday, Jaya had vowed never to quit politics like her superstar husband Amitabh Bachchan.

Jaya was visiting Babu Patti, the ancestral village of her husband, Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan 270 km from UP's capital Lucknow.

She was accompanied by Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh, who announced a grant of Rs 21 Lakh for the library from his MPLAD fund.

She said that her first experience of politics was when she accompanied the Big B for an election campaign when contested polls from Allahabad.

While Amitabh had announced retirement from politics five years ago at a Samajwadi Party rally - saying he was not fit to be in politics - Jaya made clear she had no such intentions.

On Sunday, she warmly interacted with the residents of Babu Patti and inaugurated a library in the memory of her father-in-law and noted Hindi litterateur Harivansh Rai Bachhan. She also promised to build a college for the village youth.

Jaya also met some distant relatives of Harivansh Rai Bachchan who still live in the village.
