The City Corporation will write to the Government to frame rules making the ID card issued by the local body mandatory for all autorickshaw drivers in the city.
Deputy Mayor G Happykumar told Express that the Corporation wanted the rules to make the project a cent percent success. ‘’Right now, we can only request the drivers to be part of the project. But we want to make ID card mandatory for all drivers operating in the city limits,’’ he said.
The Corporation on Friday resumed the distribution of ID cards. Though the project was inaugurated in February last, the Corporation’s delay in issuing cards had drawn criticism from various quarters.
‘’The Corporation has prepared 9,653 ID cards so far. More than 250 cards were issued on Friday and the rest will be distributed in the coming days,’’ Happykumar said.
The Corporation also plans to create awareness among drivers on the project. The card to be displayed behind the driver seat carries information on the driver and helpline numbers in case of emergency.
The information includes name, address, licence number, badge number and residential address of driver, auto stand, local police station, and helpline numbers of city police control room, traffic helpline (1099), crime stopper (1091) and woman’s helpline (1091 and 9995399953).
