The body of the naxal who died during a fire exchange in a police operation at Bilinele in Cheru forest near Kulkunda in Subrahmanya was identified as that of Yellappa on Sunday by his brother Thayappa at Wenlcok Hospital mortuary.
After identifying the body Thayappa, resident of Mandalagere village in Raichur district, told media that his brother Yellappa was arrested in a murder case in 2003 and acquitted in 2005.
“Later, he never returned home,” he said and added that, the family has not been in touch with Yellappa after his release from the jail. When asked whether the family was willing to take the body to their village, Thayappa said, “We will not take the body to our village, but will do the last rites here.
” Earlier it was assumed that the deceased was naxal leader Kuppu Swamy. Later, it was said that he was Yellappa of Raichur. But it was only on Sunday that the identity was confirmed.
During a press meet IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy said, the police was yet to know all details about Yellappa’s role in the naxal team. Detailed investigation is going on, he added.
