New Delhi: In the fifth year of CNN-IBN's Real Hero, we get you the story of Yogeshwar Kumar. In the last three decades, Kumar, an IIT engineer, has set up environmentally friendly micro-hydroelectric plants in villages where no gridline passed through. The community-run powerstation not just powers people but also empowers them.
This is the story of Yogeshwar Kumar. A man who had a vision that brought light to the lives of more than a thousand villagers in Uttarakhand.
It all started three decades ago, when the IIT-Delhi alumnus, started constructing micro-hydroelectric plants in the highlands of Uttarakhand, in villages where state electricity had not reached.
It is a simple technology, in which turbines run on snow, melting waters to generate electricity - a technique that not just generates power but also empowers people.
"This is a power station that we have built and this power station also have a chakki where the villagers grind grains and extract oil too. My motive is empower them and create employment opportunities for them."
After working on more than 15 projects, the biggest victory for Kumar has been the PowerStation at Agunda - a tiny hamlet with 50 homes where villagers opted for their own Hydel plant over the state electricity board's gridlines. Once Kumar laid the groundwork at Agunda, he converted this project into a community run powerstation. From taking care of operations, to maintenance and even bill collections, it's the villagers who are incharge.
A simple idea, a selfless approach, an inclusive project - this was Kumar's recipe to light up hundreds of lives.
