CHENNAI: Royapuram MLA and Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly D Jayakumar, admittedly has a long history with the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital. Besides the fact that it is now situated in his constituency, he has had an affinity for the institution since he was in his late teens, he revealed at a programme held to mark the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.“I also wanted to study medicine here, but unfortunately, I missed it by three marks,” he said.It is this affinity and dedication to the college and hospital that serves the entire North Chennai belt, that made him promise to take up its cause with the Chief Minister.Noting that many of the facilities needed modernisation there, he promised that he would speak to the CM and “make every effort to try and make Stanley Medical on par with the Madras Medical College or even better.” The function was organised to felicitate over 80 luminaries and organisations who had been organising free voluntary blood camps across the city.Distributing certificates of appreciation from the Government of Tamil Nadu and congratulating them, he also delved into his history with blood donation.“I have donated blood some 12 times,” he said and then recounted how ever since Amma turned 41, every birthday she has celebrated, he has organised a free blood camp in Royapuram, till date. So much so, that it has become a noble annual custom.He also appreciated the students and Dr N Rajkumar, Professor of Blood Transfusion Medicine, who was accorded the honour of the Best Blood Bank Medical Officer by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2006.Such efforts would save lives, every single day in Chennai and beyond, he added.
