New Delhi: In a video that went viral on Monday, the district magistrate of West Bengal’s Alipurduar district can be seen beating a young man at a police station for allegedly making derogatory comments about his wife on social media.
Nikhil Nirmal, the DM, has been sent on leave after the video clip provoked massive outrage on social media. According to reports, the new district magistrate is Chiranjib Ghosh.
Police arrested the accused, Vinod Kumar Sarkar, on Sunday morning. He was produced in a local court on Monday. The youth was picked up by Falakata police station after he allegedly posted "objectionable content" on social media platforms about Nirmal’s wife Nandhini Krishnan.
Soon after he was arrested, the DM reached the police station and was seen brutally thrashing the accused. The DM aslo threatened to kill the man in presence of his wife and local police officials.
Sarkar can be heard begging for forgiveness but the angry couple didn’t relent. The DM's wife is even heard asking the police to get a "lathi". A policeman says "a lathi cannot be used."
To this, the infuriated officer said, "In my district, no one speaks against me."
In the video, Nirmal’s wife can be heard asking the youth what or who made him post such comments. Then she too starts slapping and kicking him. Finally, a policeman took the accused man away. Interestingly, the entire episode unfolded at the police station without the district magistrate or his wife filing any official complaint till the time he was being beaten up.
Nirmal is a 2011 Bengal cadre IAS officer and hails from Kerala.
