Talent can be discovered in every street of our country. Some people have been carrying it for decades, but unfortunately could not bring it to the world’s attention. Local18 talks about one such man from West Bengal, who happens to be a poet as well as a singer, for over three decades. The man is named Subrata Kumar Sen, who is a resident of Bankura and has been a Kavigan singer for around 35 years, reports Local18. According to more information, he was trained by Shyamapada Bhattacharya. His remarkable talent lets him sing on any given topic, which he does without breaking a sweat. After meeting the Local18 team, he gave a little demonstration of his talent, instantly writing songs on three varying topics and even singing it.
According to Local18, during the occasion of Durga Puja, Subrata Sen sings Kavigan for over seven to eight days. Despite being a loved musical genre, Kavigan is gradually losing its relevance. During the Local18 conversation, the singer stated that the youth are busy with technology and are not able to keep up with old art forms. He believes that Kavigan is not something which can be attempted by everyone, as it needs talent as well as hours of practice.
Subrata Kumar Sen is satisfied with his talent and what it has brought him. Despite being so talented, he has not received an artist allowance, which he regrets a little. The singer is worried about the future of the Kavigan art form. According to him, the region of Bankura is a hub of folk, cultural and artistic trends, which are now on the verge of extinction.
As per the information, Kavigan is a type of folk performance, where the artist sings and performs; he comes up with a poem after he’s given a topic on the spot. The lyric incorporates mythological themes from religious texts.
