In a shocking road rage incident, a man, who was driving a two-wheeler with his wife along a three-year-old daughter and six-year-old son, was allegedly chased by five men in car for five kilometres before they ran them over in Maharashtra’s Latur.

While the victim, Sadique Shaikh, 35, and his son survived the horrific attack with injuries, his wife Iqra and daughter Nadia lost their lives. The accused have been booked under murder charges.

The incident took place on September 29 evening when the family was returning from their relative’s place in Ausa, nearly 20 km from Latur. As per the complainant, the accused’s car came suddenly in front of his bike, leading to an argument between them. However, the car allegedly chased the bike and then knocked them over near Budhana village, he added, as reported by Indian Express.

Shaikh’s lawyer alleged that the accused hurled religious slurs, saying Muslims needed to be taught a lesson before running them over. However, the FIR does not mention religious slurs. The victim’s family also alleged that the police officials were reluctant to file the case and the FIR was registered only after two days of incident.

The five accused– identified as Digambhar Pandole, Krishna Wagh, Basvaraj Dhotre, Manoj Mane and Mudame– were remanded to three days of police custody. After the incident, local residents nabbed them.

In a purported video, one of the accused admitted that they ran over the family “intentionally.

When asked if the police are investigating the case as a hate crime, Latur SP Somay Mundhe said that the probe suggests it was a case of road rage.

Road rage incidents have been making national headlines this year especially after two IT professionals were killed after they were ran over allegedly by 17-year-old in a Porsche car in May. In July, a high-profile case was reported when Mihir Shah (25), son of Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah allegedly rammed his BMW into a two-wheeler, killing a woman.
